Shiva-Vishnu Temple Koodapuzha
The renewed Shiva – Vishnu Temple is situated on the banks of Chalakudy river at Koodapuzha. The river bows deities and flows south similar to the flow of “The Greate Ganga “ which touches the “ Kashi Viswanath Temple “ in the north India. Thus it is belived that, the same Kashi Viswanath shines here.
Both the temple and its story date back to centuries. But these arent enough proofs for the myths related to temple. The existing ones are transferred through generations orally.
Shiva – Vishnu Temple and the neighbouring Shri Thirumandhamkunnu Temles were owned by the prosperous Vadakkanchery Mana. The Mana was less destroyed as the were in child. The remaining people Kashi after leaving all their belongings including the two temples. Then the ownership of both the temples went to Naduvathu Mana. But there were no religious worships or rites. It is belived that there was only feet of Mahavishnu’s Idol . the remaining part of the idol was destroyed from the attack of Tipu Sultan, which was the traditional story behind this. But later in Ashtamangalyaprashnam, it was understood that the destruction of idol was due to bad deas of some Bhramin.
Then,in 1923,the temple was almost destroyed due to the flood. After some years Naduvathu Mana too got demolished. Atlast , the temple was given to the villegers. The first ruling committee included C Divakara Panickar,A Narayanankutty,C G Balagopalan, O Rajagopalan and Painkal Damodara Menon as the leader.Later, ‘Ashtamangalya Prasnam’ and temple renewal was done. From the time the temple was given to villegers, the Brahmins of Koodapuzha Mana were the Priests.
When Koodapuzha NSS(Nair Service Society) was formed, the responsibility of the temple was given to NSS committee.
